Jessica Voorsanger’s ‘Watch More Television’ comprised a ringtone chain of television theme songs. The ringtones played on phones of audience members, who had previously agreed for something to be put on their phones during the day. Voorsanger made this into a game in which the group guessed the television show the song belonged to.
The work subverted the usual condemnation of the ringtone in a public space by making it part of the artwork. Rather interrupting or ruining the effect of the piece, we were waiting for the silence of the room to be disturbed by the ringtone. We were a group maintaining silence waiting for another person to activate the game. The absent artist creates collective consciousness through the anticipation of the mundane in the space of high art.
